Please note the Befriending service has been put on hold due to Covid-19
We all often make resolutions of what we are going to do in the year ahead and HELP Vega Baja have wasted no time in putting their resolutions into action! The charity is well known for the support it provides to people with over 41,000 euros being donated locally throughout 2018. With the evidence showing that there are high numbers of lonely and isolated people living in the Vega Baja area, the HELP Vega Baja committee has been concentrating on introducing new ways to support people.
President of the charity, Michele Masson told us “living away from family can be emotionally quite difficult but when, for example, illness steps in, people can then feel terribly isolated. Life changes and whereas a couple may be quite active, when one partner is becomes chronically ill, the other person often takes on the role of carer. Caring for a loved one can take over the life of the carer and they may have no time for themselves. We decided to introduce the Befriending Service to support carers and enable them to have a few hours just for them - even if it is simply to have a coffee with a friend.
Following assessment by our Befriending Service Co-ordinator to match up the family with a volunteer, the volunteer will go in to the home to sit and chat with the person referred, building up a friendship at the same time as giving the much needed respite for the carer. The service is also aimed at people living alone who may not have friends or family visiting them or perhaps even living in a nursing home.
