Become a Volunteer

HELP Vega Baja is always keen to hear from people who are considering volunteering with us. Our work and the services we can provide is very much dependent upon the volunteers who join our team.

We appreciate that even those of us who have retired may lead busy lives and we will always work around the commitment a volunteer is able to offer. The benefits of volunteering can be enormous. It not only offers help to those people we aim to support, worthwhile causes and the community but the benefits can also be great for the volunteer. When a volunteer is matched with the right role, it can help you to find friends, find out more about your community and put skills and experience into practice to benefit others. Evidence has also shown that volunteering can help to reduce stress, keep you mentally stimulated and give a sense of purpose.

Here at HELP Vega Baja, we are able to offer volunteering roles in various areas of the charity. You can choose (where vacancies exist) which area of the charity you wish to volunteer and of course move elsewhere in the charity if you feel it may be more in line with what you are looking for or the skills you have.

Full training is offered, and you will become part of a team with a member of the elective committee having overall responsibility.
Volunteer teams include:

Front of house : Meet and Greet

Our San Miguel Centre is made up of three main parts which include and advice centre, charity shop
and mobility equipment hire. We need volunteers to greet people when they come along to the
centre and discuss their needs. Membership applications and more general enquiries are dealt with
by this team. For more in-depth information a member of the elective committee will always be on
hand when the centre is open for support. Full training will be provided by our Charity Secretary,
Richard Garland. These are important positions and are seen as the Face of the Charity where a
professional and friendly but sensitive approach is required. Volunteers on the front desk may also
be asked, if time permits, to undertake various administrative issues, again with training.

Donation Sorting Volunteers

Our charity receives many donations of clothing, bric a brac etc. We have a team of volunteers (both
ladies and gentlemen) who receive the donations into the store room and sort through into items
that can be sold in our charity shop/market stall or which perhaps should be advertised separately
on our Buy and Sell /Facebook page. Volunteers from the sorting team also ensure that the shop is
fully stocked and remains clean and tidy. If required, members of this team cover the shop counter
when customers wish to purchase items.

Welfare Team

The welfare team is an area that has grown considerably over recent years and offers both practical
and emotional support to clients. Advice and practical support completing various benefit
applications, liaising with various agencies, befriending people by way of regular face to face
meetings or via telephone are just a few of the areas that the welfare team are supporting people.
Volunteers for this team frequently (but not limited to) have a caring or nursing background.
Support for carers is particularly important to the charity and is an area that we know many people
struggle with daily.

Events/Fundraising

Our charity is self-funding, and it is therefore very important that we have an active fundraising
team that provides us with the opportunity to raise important funds for the charity. Events not only
raise funds but also offer support to those people within the community who may feel lonely or
isolated – coffee and chat events, lunches etc and need people committed to support us with this.
If you would like to find out more about volunteering or you would like in the first instance to come
along to our San Miguel Centre to meet the team and see the work we do, please contact Richard in
the first instance by calling him on 966 723 733 or email office@helpvegabaja.com
